Shopping Tips & News

The malls in your neighborhood are pretty much owned by either Simon Properties or General Growth Partners. On Fridays, most of the General Growth Partners (GGP) malls will be offering free gift cards. Shop at GGP Malls on Fridays and get a free $10 Mall gift card when you spend $100 at the mall. To find the mall nearest you check this GGP Mall Directory. Then on the Mall website look for the Merrier Fridays link for details.

Black Friday Shopping: Finding The Deals

by The Queen on November 24, 2010

in Shopping Tips & News

You can almost smell the turkey now. Thanksgiving is just a couple of days away. You can look forward to a festive day filled with lots of fun, lots of family gossip and loads of carbs. This year, you can also add shopping to your Thanksgiving activities. Yes, many stores will be rolling out the special deals early and opening on Thanksgiving.

Prep Work

Just like Thanksgiving cooking, you need to do lots of prep work for Thanksgiving shopping, especially this year with so many changes.

  1. Get your list – Make a shopping list of all the gifts you need to buy and the amount budgeted per gift.
  2. Browse the ads – Do not go shopping without first having browsed all the store ads. You can find them in your newspaper or at bfads.net or dealnews.com/blackfriday. Dealnews even has a handy search feature so you can easily search for a specific item instead of going through all the ads.
  3. Pay attention to the fine print – Most of the really good deals have fine print. Read the fine print and know the quantity and time restrictions on the deal.
  4. Know when to shop for the deals– This year some of the most popular stores will be open and offering special deals on Thanksgiving Day. The stores include Sears, Walmart, Old Navy and Toys R Us. But some will be open in the morning and some in the evening. Others will open at midnight such at the Outlet Centers. Visit their website or call to learn their hours.
  5. Know where to shop for the deals – If you will be shopping at mall stores, choose your mall wisely. Malls and shopping centers are competing against each other for your business and offering you many goodies. Check out the mall or shopping center’s website before you head out. You may be surprised to find your mall offering an extra bonus for shopping there. This is especially true for many GGP malls. For example, half of the GGP malls in Atlanta will be offering a free $10 gift card with a $100 purchase before noon on Friday.

Things to Remember

  1. Price match policies – Instead of running around town from store to store, ask your favorite stores about their price matching policies. Many stores will honor the price in a competitor’s ad, you just have to ask and show the ad. However limited quantity or time items may be excluded from these policies. Amazon.com will even price match major websites.
  2. Get and save your receipts – Stores have gotten even more stringent with their return policies this year. Make sure you know how and when an item can be returned. It is also helpful to provide a gift receipt with the gift. This is most important when purchasing electronics as many times they have limited return periods and even restocking fees.
  3. Don’t forget about coupons – It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the sales and promotions but don’t leave money on the table by forgetting to use coupons. Stores have many coupons this time of year, so pair them with the sales and get even more savings. ShoppingQueen.com will feature lots of printable coupons.
  4. Don’t worry about missing out– Black Friday is no longer the only big shopping day. So if you didn’t get all your shopping done, don’t worry. Cyber Monday is next week and you can take advantage of sales and promotions online.

An Ex-Mas Story - Part 1 by Jack's_Smirking_RevengeThe weather may not feel like it, but Christmas is right around the corner. We have only 10 weeks left. So forget about Halloween, it’s time to start thinking about the holidays. Being in a tough economy, it’s even more important to start planning early.

While green and red are the colors of the season, you don’t want your bank account to also be in the red. Get ready with this 10 week holiday plan.

Budget

Santa Claus has a list and you should too. Before you start shopping, create a gift list. The list should include names, gift ideas and costs. Do not spend one penny without first creating your list. So here is what to consider:

  1. Spread holiday cheer not New Year’s debt – Avoid the temptation to buy now and pay later. You don’t want to still be paying for toys your kids no longer play with. If you can’t afford to pay for it this year, either don’t buy it or take something else off your budget.
  2. You have ten weeks left, start saving a little each week. Your gift list should be based on how much you can afford. Divide the total of your gift costs by 10 and that is how much you need to save each week.
  3. Consider a gift exchange – You can save time and money with a gift exchange by buying one nice gift instead of multiple smaller gifts. Each person draws a single name, and to make it simple the name can include their wish list too. Don’t be afraid to speak up and suggest a gift exchange. Many are feeling overwhelmed with holiday shopping so they will be glad to have less to buy. Gift exchanges work very well in offices as well as extended families. For participants who don’t all live or work in the same location, check out SecretSanta.com for an online version to help manage it all.
  4. Remember the extras – Holiday costs aren’t just limited to gifts. You have decorations, wrapping supplies, hostess gifts at parties and baby sitters just to name a few. Leave room in your budget to cover these extra costs. Microsoft has a very handy Holiday Budget Planner you can download to help with planning all the costs.

Sign up for Savings

To make your dollars go further and stay under budget take advantage of all the savings. The best way to learn about all the deals is to sign up for savings.

  1. Store lists – Every store now has a website. Visit the websites of the stores you frequent and sign up for their promotions newsletter. During the holidays, stores send out many special coupons and offers just for their subscribers. Many stores are also sending out even better promotions through facebook, so check out their fan page too.
  2. Shopping centers and malls – Shopping centers and malls compete against each other for your dollars. They need to help their stores sell in order to keep charging them high rent. I frequently receive better store promotions from malls than I do from the store itself. They also offer incentives like mall gift cards or free gifts for spending a certain amount at their center.
  3. ShoppingQueen.com – I sign up for all kinds of store and mall newsletters to keep my audience in the know. Check out my website before you go shopping and sign up for my newsletter to take advantage of all the savings this time of year.

My Picks for Black Friday

by The Queen on November 25, 2009

in Shopping Tips & News

Black FridayWhile the holiday shopping season is filled with deals for the little kids, this shopping season is one of the most exciting for some of the most popular gifts for adults. Hhgregg is working hard to compete with BestBuy now that Circuit City is gone and their prices this year are really low. Prices have finally become affordable for name brand GPS navigation systems, Blu-Ray players and HDTV’s. So let’s get started with some of my favorites:

Hhgregg: Panasonic HD Blu-Ray player: $99 (after $30 rebate)

GPS Systems

Walmart: TomTom 4.3” screen & spoken street names: $89

Home

IKEA has some great deals including a sofa for $199 and 20pc flatware for $9.99 great for extra guests during dinner, great prices on gift bags, wrapping and tissue paper too. Many just for $1.
